A simple New Year's Eve plan for hosting at home

A loose schedule for a New Year's Eve party at home that keeps the energy up until midnight without wearing out the host.

Most New Year's Eve parties start strong and sag around 10:30, when the food is gone and midnight still feels far away. A rough plan fixes that.

  • 8:00 Guests arrive. Put out the heartier food now, while people are hungry.
  • 9:30 Start a game or a small activity. Something with teams works, because it mixes groups who don't know each other.
  • 10:30 Second round of food. Something warm and salty, like sliders, pizza or a breakfast-for-dinner spread.
  • 11:30 Hand out noisemakers and glasses. Turn the music up and the lights down.
  • 11:58 Everyone in one room, TV on for the countdown.
  • 12:15 Coffee and water out. Rides arranged for anyone who needs one.

Keep the sparkling wine cold in a cooler near the countdown room so you aren't digging through the fridge at 11:59.
